This yellow card/red card stuff is pretty ridiculous. To be forced to play a man down for a whole game is just such an overwhelming advantage for the opposing team. I could understand it if they ejected the player who commited the foul, but to completely ruin the rest of the game for his entire team because of 1 or 2 incidents is just wrong. Why not just force them to play a man down for say 10-15 minutes total, after which point they can add a substitute and come back at full strength?

How many times have we seen on instant replay that the refs were completely off base with thier decision to give a yellow card? i would say at least 25% of the time you can obviously tell that it was all acting and there was no actual infraction. Yet even in these cases, the yellow cards still carry on to the next game.

Agree the punishment doesn't always equal the offense. The card rules need to be adjusted as well as the offsides rules. Game could be much better but needs some changes.

Yes too many yellow cards this WC. I think like an average of 5 per match. This ref was just too card happy.

game has undergone minimal changes over a hundred and more year, and is where it should be. Of course one should get a red card if he twice commits a violent foul or a foul that clearly puts the other team in disadvantage, or a straight red if he attempts a kick that can ruin anothers playing career and that of course should be reflected on the rest of the team. For the offside see the offshore forum

It's good you guys are getting into the sport and pondering stuff, but don't get over you heads and make bold dumbass comments.

Football has tons of academics around the globe that have figured out every little detail of the sport, you can't reinvent the wheel, try being a little more reserved with something you know and coprehend little about, don't be so impertinent.

"Soccer has some dumbass rules and officiating..."

Funny, I was thinking the same thing about the NBA. And then there's the NFL, etc, etc...

These young, whippersnappers should realize that the global game is perfect the way it is. To suggest otherwise is utterly ludicrous and will bring on the wrath of JackDee, self appointed champion of Soccer. Good job Jack, let their ouzo be served on yellow and red cards while the rest of us keep quiet about the offsides rule.

if you don't understand the distinction between the comment that begins with "soccer has some dumbass rules, blah, blah..it's ridicilous", and one that may start off as "I have some critisism on...blah blah..." you should work on it. Read the thread on the offside too in the offshore, football has been around for a long time and it's gone through some minor, if somehow important, adjustments but no major rule changes.

The worst part about the world cup to me is all the damn ties. I mean come on, this is supposed to be the biggest sports event in the world or whatever so play until someone wins. I'm not a soccer fan but started following the World Cup because I got in a pool at work. I watched the US/Italy game yesterday and I found myself getting into it a little while they were playing. But then when they quit when it was 1-1, I felt pissed off. Like I had just wasted 2 hours of my life. If the World Cup doesn't care if there is a winner in the game, why should I?

There is a winner and is the one who ends up with the most points in the group. You tie, you get a point

The best soccer (quit calling it football) rule they could come up with would be to give the ref the power to yellow card anyone who takes a dive. When you see the replays of these "fouls" it's quite clear that these guys are members of the Screen Actors' Guld; I've never seen a soocer foul that was as bad as the "victim" made it out to be.

Where's the scoring? This sport has got to be the most boring sport ever its like Hockey. Where's the excitement in this sport? Some guy gets tackled and he lays there crying just get up you little *****. They need to increase the scoring in this game. Its like pulling teeth just trying to score. Atleast in basketball there is more scoring. How can you sit there and watch 2 teams end the game in 0-0 draw? Its a complete waste of time!

And what would be the difference from your earlier post in this thread, and I quote, "It's good you guys are getting into the sport and pondering stuff, but don't get over you heads and make bold dumbass comments"? If you are going to critique you should really rise above.

I realize that, but it still doesn't make any sense. If this is the highest level of the game and such a prestigous championship to play for then there is no reason they can't play OT until someone wins the game. Why reward a team for not winning?

...........speaking of dumbass officiating, it looks like we're seeing it in the Swiss-Togo game, didn't call a penalty or even a foul on a clear occasion, then the Togo player stuck his foot in a swiss player on a tackle at midfield and still nothing called.

These retards don't call what should be called, then they try to make up for it later only to F**k things up w/ bad calls. Never seen soccer called so bad in my life(WC2006), looks like NBA refs.

Perhaps it's the difference between the Old World and the New World. There are buildings that are thousands of years old in Europe. In the US there are few that are more than a couple hundred years old. Things change here all the time.

In our beloved sports we allow for rules changes to make the game more enjoyable. Dunks and 3-point shots were once not allowed but now add to the excitement of basketball (some would say to the detraction of the game). Baseball has undergone changes as well with the introduction of the Designated Hitter.

Soccer has undergone few changes. I believe there could be some changes made to make it more interesting but perhaps it wouldn't be allowed by some of the older countries where changes in sports don't take place as frequently as in the US.

Another thing I don't like is stoppage time. Why not just stop the clock when the ref stops play?

I've always wondered that myself...

because that would stop the flow of the game.

"The best soccer (quit calling it football)"

what a fucktard comment...just cause you guys over on the other side of the atlantic, and to be exact just one country the U.S. has decided to call it soccer the rest of the world shouldn't call it by the name it's always gone by, football...jesus, the audacity in this...

I wonder how much stoppage time there will be in the Netherlands/Portugal game in the 2nd half...

There has been literally nothing going on on the field in 10 of the last 15 minutes... I wonder if they will just slap 3 minutes on and call it a game?
